RF1PP Chat Barcelona

As promised, here is the transcript of the post-Spanish Grand Prix chat from Tuesday 29th April. Don’t forget that you can find the transcripts directly on the following page : http://my.ing-renaultf1.com/en/chat.
The next chat will take place on Tuesday 13 May to review the Turkey Grand Prix.

RF1 Paddock Pass: Hey guys, thanks for being with us once again for our traditional post GP chat!

cirebox: Hi RF1PP, this is not a question, I just want to congratulate the whole team for the improvements!

Everyone else says Hi!

waga: I think that FA get into the pit for refuelling four or five laps after Kimi… Retroactively, was the beautiful Fernando's P2 on the grid considered by the whole team as resulting from favourable circumstances, or like an accomplishment with nothing left to chance? I think I know the answer but I'd be delighted to read it!

RF1 Paddock Pass: We all know since the beginning of the season that Fernando is doing more than his maximum with the car...
He has always been very good in quali... I remember of that wonderful pole in Silverstone with a very very heavy car
This being said, we have undoubtedly improved. For the quali, but also for the race...

cirebox: Do you believe that the other teams should be concerned for the upcoming races ? ;-)

RF1 Paddock Pass: We do hope....

cirebox: Do these improvements help the team?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Definitely yes! We did a real step forward this weekend. We were much quicker during the qualifying with two cars in Q3 and we were also more efficient on longer runs during the race. The team was of course disappointed after two DNF but we have now the possibility to enjoy racing again as Fernando said after he just had his engine failure.

cirebox: Fernando seemed quite happy despite his retirement … am I wrong?

RF1 Paddock Pass: I don't think he was happy... but he was not down! He knows that we have made a step forward and that it should continue that way!

waga: Thank you

def: first "congratulations !" for the improvement, to everyone in the team !!! And a question: to further gain performance, do you have the possibility to tune some parameters of the ECU or to adjoin other external or internal processors?

RF1 Paddock Pass: No def, the ECU unit is frozen for all teams and you cannot open it because it's sealed... You cannot just touch it, the only thing you can do is to play with or adjust the interface (I mean the windows displayed on the PC screens when it is under operation)...

Boss73: Can you tell us what happened to Fernando's engine? Is it linked to overheating, to a hydraulic failure...?

RF1 Paddock Pass: it has to do with the distribution...

muriel: can you tell us if the gap between the ferrari and fernando has effectively been reduced with the new developments on the car?

RF1 Paddock Pass: I think it's obvious when looking at the qualifications but Ferrari remain really on top of all...

Boss73: Thanks!

fraggle: It sounded like the fault on Fernando's car this weekend was more a manufacturing fault on one of the engine components?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Yes Fraggle... but the problem has now be understood and solved... We are not particularly worried for Turkey.

centauryo: what would have been the final result for Alonso without the engine failure, taking into consideration all the pit stops of the other teams?

RF1 Paddock Pass: We believe that the fifth place was really realistic...

def: thanks rf1pp!

RF1 Paddock Pass: Now, a lot of things can happen during a race!

Zelos: Hi RF1PP and everyone! First congratulations for that crazy weekend! How does Nelson feel, after this weekend with ups and downs?

RF1 Paddock Pass: He was disappointed with the DNF. In his opinion, he has made a mistake (when going into the gravels) and then he had to "overdrive" to gain lost positions... When he tried to overpass BOU from far behind, BOU didn't see him... but that's racing and that costs a lot to both drivers... But it's part of learning! If it was easy to drive a F1 in a GP, there would be much more drivers going to racing!

Seb28: Any news from Heikki?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Not more than what you have read over the last days in the media. We were all very afraid...

waga: With the exception of the incident with SB, we have seen Nelson very close to his team mate over the week-end. Are you surprised or not?

RF1 Paddock Pass: We can see him improve... and we are really happy for that! We hope that Nelson will keep pushing and that he will continue to learn from his world champion team mate!

mirage: first of all, I'd like to congratulate the team for the big step forward... are there still some important evolutions planned for Turkey ??

RF1 Paddock Pass: Many of you are asking that question. Indeed, we still have evolutions to put on the car for the upcoming races, including Turkey. But the major updates were used for Spain. But we keep on improving the car... These last updates were evaluated in Barcelona during last testings...

OMONIA: the truck was very good and close to the BMW and MERCENDES. Do you believe that is going to continue to the next races?

RF1 Paddock Pass: We hope so! We will have some more developments for the Turkish GP and Fernando confirmed it was only the first step! We try to be very aggressive in our development strategy and none of them is circuit related so it must help us throughout the season.

user-21: Bob Bell said in an interview to the French newspaper "L'Equipe", that the wind tunnel failed during winter... can you tell us a bit more about that ? Thanks

RF1 Paddock Pass: Well, nothing exploded as suggested by the Auto Hebdo magazine...

Boss73: When are the next testings scheduled?

RF1 Paddock Pass: From 14 to 16 of May, at Paul Ricard. I don't know yet who will be driving...

jeje33: Will you be alone there?

RF1 Paddock Pass: No, those are official testings. All the teams should be there to prepare the Monaco and Canadian races... It's the ideal track with this respect.

erickenobi: do you still have problems with the ECU?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Not really... The bigger issues were fixed during winter... The problem was to get used to the new tools... and that's okay now.

Carambar: DO you think that you can reach the podium as soon as in Turkey?

RF1 Paddock Pass: No, this is not our objective right now... We want to have both cars in Q3 and run in front of all teams chasing Ferrari, McLaren et BMW... Top5 would be great!

Winnief1forever: Hello and congratulations. One question, we've heard over the whole weekend that there are some problems between Viry and Enstone, with Viry being blamed not to provide the best material. Is this true?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Well, I'm part of the team, I was there… and I didn't hear anything about all this! Very honestly, journalists are inclined to create problem where there isn't! What we are aiming at is to come back to the top! At 100%!

Carambar: thank you

oneill: I was very proud to see nano on top of the time sheets over the whole weekend... can you put numbers on the step forward of the R28 ??

RF1 Paddock Pass: At the moment, it's difficult to evaluate our improvements. Barcelona is a track very well known of all, the teams were probably very close to or at their optimum pace... Thus we will wait until the next race to get a better idea of our step forward, in every areas involved...

Boss73: The new CFD is planned for July I think, are you going to use it for the R28? Or it will be too late and it's going to be used for the new car from the start?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Recurrent question… Our CFD is planned for this summer... obviously it will first be used to develop the R28, and then after for the R29 project...

jumeaux: Can we expect again a significant step forward considering all the new evos planned for the next races?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Well, we are working hard for that... In F1, you have to continuously make progress, otherwise you may compromise the ongoing season, but also the following one(s)

Carambar: I know you may not like the question, but do you think that Fernando will stay "at home" if he is unable to fight for victories?

RF1 Paddock Pass: At the moment, he seems very comfortable with us. He mentioned on several occasions that he knew it wouldn't be easy to come back. But, today, he's very happy to see the improvements and he knows how important it is to get the whole support from a team… which is actually the case at RF1!

user-21: Do you know the reason for the transmission problems with the onboard cameras, they are lasting since the beginning of the season ? thank you

RF1 Paddock Pass: It has to do with the FOM... unfortunately, I cannot help. I know you talked about that problem on the blog... but sorry!

Fabienzo: I've heard that the racing cars are equipped with GPS this season, is it true? And if yes, for which purpose?

RF1 Paddock Pass: It has been the case for a long time! This allows to localise all cars on a map and to manage gaps between the drivers, e.g. during the qualification session and the race...

Aurede09: Do you think you will be able to simultaneously improve the pace and reliability of the car??

RF1 Paddock Pass: FYI: the last DNFs due to engine failure: Italy 2006, Bahrain 2005, Hungary 2004

muriel: when are the staff and the drivers arriving in Turkey?

RF1 Paddock Pass: A few trucks went directly to Turkey from Barcelona. The staff will be there as from Monday...

user-21: thank you anyway... I was asking because you mentioned last time that you would ask to a FOM technician

RF1 Paddock Pass: Yes I know... but I cannot help at my own level of RF1PP...

Fabienzo: What is your feeling for the next race in Turkey?

RF1 Paddock Pass: We hope to have a good pace there again!
We are eager to take a small revenge…

Carambar: what are the specific problems with the Istanbul track?

RF1 Paddock Pass: The famous turn 8... A very long left turn where the drivers get nearly 4G. You have to keep the dust away from the engines, to take care of your tyres...
Quite a lot of things to manage as from Friday!

user-21: do you think that the lack of traction (Fernando was complaining about that in Bahrain) are definitely solved now?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Traction problems are just present and recurrent in all teams, you'll notice that if you read their official statements...
The new regulations don't help here! But obviously, we are working hard on that issue!

cirebox: People use to say "A good car in Barcelona is a good car everywhere else" .... hence a good season finish?

RF1 Paddock Pass: There are still 14 races to go!!

But we are just doing our best for that, believe me!

cirebox: Thank you for the chat session RF1 PP..... please let both the Viry and Enstone sites know about our full support!!!

def: still 14 races to win!

erickenobi: do you plan to bring some evolutions to the engine despite the freeze? Because I know that you're working to improve it!

RF1 Paddock Pass: How to improve something that is frozen...
Engine freeze means no evolution... you can only tune a few things, but following the rules and under the screening of the FIA.

Boss73: Yes RF1 PP, tell them that we love them and that they are just doing an awesome work!!

oneill: Are questions falling around like bombs??

RF1 Paddock Pass: Yes, a little bit... so we have to sort them out, select them and answer... You are about a hundred people connected right now so it's a kind of battle with the keyboard for RF1PP!

Angus: Would the Team say that they now understand the Bridgestone as well as the Michelin?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Taking into account the long-lasting relationship with Michelin I don't think we can already say that... but we fell comfortable now with Bridgestone, we know how they work, their products...

def: thank you rf1pp and keep on going !!! We are all behind you... as usual ;)

RF1 Paddock Pass: Many of you were here again this evening...

Sorry for not answering all the questions.

piston: victory is close

RF1 Paddock Pass: I hope that you have appreciated this new chat session...

Alomon: I'm disappointed that you didn't select any of my questions :( I'll try again next time ;) Good evening and good preparation for Turkey!! Try to do as good qualifications as in Spain :D

muriel: we believe in a victory for fernando, congratulations again

Boss73: Thank you again RF1 PP!

user-21: 45 minutes for this chat !! Wow! A new record... Thank you for your availability! Go RF1

piston: you remembered us of good memories thank you

kalel300: we are all behind you

fraggle: Will an English translation of the chat be available later for fans that wish to read this afternoon's chat?

RF1 Paddock Pass: Yes a translation will be available tomorrow I hope...

Everyone says Bye.

RF1 Paddock Pass: Good evening everyone...
Be sure to be at our next chat session after Turkey!

Thank you very much for the transcript, its really helpful.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=xDsZ3OntTH4&a ...

The start of the race. To me it seems Fernando had a very good start, only cought alone between the Ferraris there was nothing he could do against their tactics...

  2. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 13:33:59 by f1angel

u're right BM! He did have a great start, but there was no way he was able to battle it out with the Ferrari's!

    scenic thanks for traslate chat

"Renault engine boss Denis Chevrier has revealed that it should not be too difficult to address the engine failure that put Fernando Alonso out of the recent Spanish Grand Prix.
Although the expired V8 is still being analysed in detail at the team's Viry-Chatillon engine headquarters, the Frenchman said his initial diagnosis is a failure near the top of the 2.4 litre unit.
He said minor adjustments were likely to be enough to solve the problem before the Turkish Grand Prix."

I certainly hope so. It should not have happened in the first place but sometimes- *sigh*- bad things come together.
Wow- 100 people in the chat? No wonder so many questions did not go through- maybe it would be an idea to add a counter to the chat, so that we can see how many are connected?

Thanks Blackmadonna for the video output Alonso from another angle of vision!

There were two answers in yesterday’s Transcript Chat Spanish GP that I would like to comment about. The first one: “RF1 Paddock Pass: How to improve something that is frozen...Engine freeze means no evolution... you can only tune a few things, but following the rules and under the screening of the FIA” sounds clearly self-defeating. There are literally hundreds of improvements that you can make in casting, forging, machining, stamping, tooling, assembling, polishing, honing, material quality, testing and measuring methodologies, order of the operations, management strategies, part preservation, etc. without touching the design at all and using exactly the same material standards and product specifications. Processes are always susceptible to continual improvement. The result will be, no doubt, a better performance and a better reliability. The last race is a clear example. It shows that there were still opportunities for improvement that might have prevented the malfunction. Four DNFs for engine collapse in fifty-nine events, or almost 7 % failure rate, is nothing that anyone should feel proud of, as the answer (RF1 Paddock Pass: FYI: the last DNFs due to engine failure: Italy 2006, Bahrain 2005, Hungary 2004) seems to suggest. It can definitely be improved.

@ rf1pp. What happened to the 20 odd comments on the previous blog thread? Has there been a glitch with the site when this new blog was loaded in?

  10. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 16:31:54 by RF1 Paddock Pass

Hi Fraggle, due to a technical problem the last blog post was deleted. Apologies to all.

  11. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 18:53:41 by Korrie

Thanks for the transcript, RF1PP. Unfortunately my question to you was in the deleted blog - no worries, these things happen - I'll just ask it again:

As we know, Fernando changed his chassis on Saturday morning. I just wondered how many spare chassis an F1 team takes to a race, and do they take less when they go to long distance GPs i.e. regarding logistics and costs of transportation?

I thought Steve Nielsen's comments re: safety car and closed pitlane were very interesting and he put forward some very good points as to why this regulation should be in place. Safety for the marshalls and drivers should be paramount of course. However what would the implications for safety be if we started seeing cars running out of fuel on the track during lengthy safety car periods? Perhaps the type of penalty should be reviewed - maybe a fine? Because it does seem unfair to penalise teams and drivers during the race as it stands. Hmmm... it's a difficult one and I'm not sure how this could be addressed.

  12. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 19:26:37 by theBlueOrangeLion

Talking 'bout starts - our starts haven't been particularly fabulous this year, at least not like Malaysia 2006 FA's leap. I know that all those launch tricks were removed (so I heard) from the cars but what does it take to make a great start in 2008?

  13. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 19:53:30 by siberianlady

@11 Korrie- the teams have no spare cars as such any more. They have one spare monocoque which can then be built into a "car" from the individual components- reason why if the use the spare they can only use it the next day. The days of jumping into a spare car are over- abolished due to cost cutting.

  14. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 19:55:53 by siberianlady

As for the safety car rule- yes of course safety is paramount- and this rule has caught out many drivers through no fault of their own- the fact that this is random then is in actual fact fair on all. I just think the extent of the penalty is over the top- I mean a drive through would be bad enough but a stop and go is really over the top. Think that if it gets changed this will be 2009 at the earliest.

  15. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 19:57:11 by siberianlady

@ BOl- did you get your date with Vanessa? Keep us up to date! Winks!

oh well i was devastated when alonso and piquet retired but overall im happy cause i believe we have definitely moved ahead of the midfield group

  20. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 20:24:44 by reina

RF1PP: Is it true that he broke the R28 Alonso in Montmeló was a break at the top of the propellant?

¿ es cierto que lo que se le rompió al R28 de Alonso fué una rotura en la parte superior del propulsor?

  21. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 21:35:37 by Korrie

Mmmm, lovely blue pics, BOL - I'm liking those roof tiles a lot! I hope that your 'tryst' with the fair Isabelle meets up to your expectations. Some advice from a friend: Before your meeting - DON'T forget to pinch your brother's blue-tinted specs - I'm sure she'd really like them, and it's a safe bet then that you'll be onto a winner - Good luck!

@ BOL- sorry- of course I meant the lovely Isabelle! I'm sadly in love with the mole but don't tell him that please (Ps my real name is Penelope!)Lol

  24. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 22:39:02 by Korrie

@23Would that be Penelope Pitstop? lol

  25. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 22:49:09 by siberianlady

@ Korrie- like Bol knows- the Mole has several Penenlopes running around................prefer FLo though! Lol (Apologies bloggers- my silly mood seems to have run unabated since early this morning!) I hope for a cure by tomorrow!

  26. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 22:50:43 by siberianlady

Come to that- where is our friend BOL todnight?

  27. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 23:24:37 by theBlueOrangeLion

    Servus, I'm here.

Glad you enjoyed the blue "Picasso" pics.

Siberianlady, maybe the Mole would like to run away with you, this way I can take over his position at the Motor Racing and Trade Development Department (formerly known as The Motor Racing and Tinpot Dictator Department) of the Secret Intelligence Service and Isabelle will be working for me? I'm a bit jealous of the Mole's connections to be honest.

I'll finally get to meet Isabelle tomorrow, isn't that wonderful?

And watch out for 100% official MySpace my FA fantasy page. Korrie's been writing all this time, she has a huge backlog of Fernie dreams and we'll be launching the page soon.

  28. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 23:43:30 by Korrie

@27Jeez BOL, you sure know how to put the pressure on - I'm gonna have to eat a lot more cheese & marmite to acquire more Ferni dreams in order to keep BOL's site running. That's not an 'old wives' tale' BTW - aforementioned food items contain certain proteins that stimulate the brain into having very vivid and weird dreams. There's a tip for you all!

  29. Wednesday 30 April 2008 at 23:52:42 by Korrie

Well I'm saying goodnight folks - have to get more dreams in! Have a good day tomorrow everyone:0)

    evening, my good fellow Renaulites....

I listened to the podcast last night and again today on the way back from work...

    Myu favourite bit?

Holly: "...y'know, d'you...d'you...are you good at Turkey?"

    Pat: "What, me personally?"

lol, bless...I love it when Holly fumbles with a question (very endearing), and Pat replies with a devastatingly witty answer, for Holly to laugh sheepishly!

You something is great audio, if it gives you such imagery that you wouldn't need a video!

On another note, I thought some of you would appreciate this:

a shot of Fernando throwing his gloves into the crowd on that hill just after his engine packed in....

And forgot to say, cheers for the transcript. I have to rely on it considering I'm always at work when the chat session is on.

Rest in peace - Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna.

  38. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 11:29:38 by scenic

Hello everyone (the mads and the others - if any) !

I just wanted to draw your attention to a blog post which was published recently on the FR side:

    http://my.ing-renaultf1.com/fr/blog/248- ...

It's -nicely- written by a FR blogger (cirebox) who had the opportunity to visit the RF1 garage at the last GP. Even if you don't understand French, it is worth having a look at it, just for the "behind the scenes" pictures.

  39. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 12:47:55 by theBlueOrangeLion

Merci, Scenic, nice account and relaxed pics from Cirebox.

  40. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 12:54:08 by reina

    Hello.
FIA investigates the medical team Montmeló
I feel shame because if people in the FIA go against Spain in all
Iam very angry with FIA because is not justicie.

    http://en.f1-live.com/f1/en/hearlines/ne ...

  41. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 13:17:03 by theBlueOrangeLion

I wouldn't say the Federation goes against Spain or anything like that, after all Spain's currently featured 2 times on the calendar. I think they want medical help to act faster which is normal, it's a question of life and death. It's more about safety of the drivers and it's the right thing to do. Mark Webber said GPDA will raise questions about this particular corner - he wants bigger run-off area. So it's in no way related to Spain or the FIA's supposed bias towards anybody. F1 is big in Spain because of FA just like it was in Germany because of MS. There are plenty of German drivers in F1 these days but they just don't generate the kind of adoration that the Schumi cult did, so that means interest to F1 is sort of falling in Vaterland, now there's only 1 GP there. Can we say it's somebody's fault? No, it's life.

  42. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 13:18:10 by siberianlady

@ 40 reina- don't take it to heart- this is something they always do after a major crash- to see if they could have got to the driver quicker or whatever. Its nothing against the spanish authorities- its in the interests of safety and quite normal. They did the same after Kubica's crash last year as well!
By the way- I admit to being mad! Lol
Hey BOL I can let you have a couple of my weird dreams too........

  43. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 13:21:35 by theBlueOrangeLion

That would be great, Siberianlady, we want your dreams!

  46. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 13:54:01 by reina

Please Scenic 38,You can not traslate the blog Cirebox francaise into Englis? is just an idea, thanks traslate chat.

  47. Thursday 1 May 2008 at 14:13:59 by petros

    Hey Guys,
I'm sorry I haven't visited the blog for such a long time but I was undergoing strong cortizone treatment in Hospital.
I just want to say I am trilled with our performance in Spain. Just as I mentioned in a previous blog, isn't it better if we break down while we are fighting in the front rather than struggle to compete midfield?
In any event, I shall now make another prediction. We are going to win more than one race this year. I know it. There is no arguing about it because as always Renault may go through a rough patch but they always find a way to gallop ahead and become unbeatable.
History is once again repeating itself.
