The keys to the race with Pat Symonds

Sunday 11 May 2008 | RF1 Paddock Pass

Istanbul Sunday Pat Symonds Interview

The Executive Director of Engineering for the ING Renault F1 Team analyses the team's performance just a few hours before the race.

Pat, how do you view the team's approach to the weekend so far?
Pat Symonds: Things have not been easy. The free practice sessions, for example, took place with poor track conditions and that had an impact on all the team's programmes. Having said that, I think that the team has overcome these difficulties pretty well. On Friday Nelson had a lot of problems, but he improved yesterday morning and I was really impressed with that. I thought that he would make Q3 and so I was terribly disappointed to see him go out in Q1. As for Fernando, he had a solid start to the weekend. His qualifying was not perfect - he made a few mistakes in Q2 and in Q3 - but that is to be expected when the competition is so close and you have to attack to the maximum.

What are the conditions like today?
PS
:The temperature of the track is warming up faster than in the last few days as there is less cloud and the sun is shining on the circuit. That will have an impact on the behaviour of the tyres. On Friday the behaviour of the two types of tyre was clear, but yesterday during qualifying things became more complicated, and with track conditions 10°C warmer, we approached the moment when the behaviour of the tyres changed. That is why Lewis Hamilton did his last lap on the hard tyres and regretted it, then Fernando completed his lap on soft tyres and regretted it also.

What will be the effects of the hotter track today?
PS: The soft tyres should suffer less with graining and it will be easier to bring the two types of tyre up to temperature.

What have you noticed about your rivals: Ferrari, McLaren, BMW...?
PS: The Ferraris are an enigma. After Barcelona, I said that that had an enormous advantage and I expected that they would continue to fly here. But they have not had it all their own way. Still, they have good straightline speed, which is certainly a big advantage in Istanbul. McLaren? We thought that we were very close to them on Friday and Fernando thought it would be possible to worry them, but we lost a bit after that. BMW have had a different approach to the weekend. It seems that they used soft tyres in qualifying and so they may choose to start the race with this type of tyre.

Which tyre compound will have the advantage this weekend?
PS: The harder compound will certainly be the one that will suit most of our competitors. They could therefore choose to use the softer tyre at the end of the race, when the conditions will be the best for this type of tyre.

What can we expect from the race?
PS: I believe that the leaders will stop around lap 17/18, then around the 40th lap. Those who are bit further back will probably pit around the 22nd lap, then in the mid forties. So I think two-stop strategies.

Have you chosen a strategy as aggressive as the one in Barcelona for Fernando?
PS: In Spain, we were clearly behind the BMWs and in front of the Red Bulls. This situation gave us the possibility to work on a specific strategy. This weekend, things are more complicated: We must watch those in front and behind us. Our strategy has been conceived to reflect this situation and the first lap will be of vital importance, even more so than usual. It's good that Fernando starts on the clean side of the track, which will be an advantage.

    All makes sense to me...

It's clear that there are no huge surprises waiting, considering neither the team or Fernando are being coy about it...yet at the same time no huge disappointment either. So where we are is pretty much expected, but a 'good' quali would have been a place or two better with the perfect lap and better tyre choice.

These things happen, and there will always be victims to unstable conditions - we just happened to be one of those on this occasion, whereas in other place it was other teams.

Lets see what happens today...as Fernando always says, the race is long.

Did Nelson start this gramprix using a new engine?
Or do he use the one from Spain?
The last option coul be a good thin, as it has not gone for many miles. And therfor might could be "pushed" harder in this second and last gramprix.
Or did they find it better to change it, because of Fernandos enginefailor?

  3. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 12:28:58 by RF1 Paddock Pass

Nelson's engine is on its second race - the same one he used in Spain. Fernando has a fresh engine.

  4. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 12:31:34 by ZackGem

    Thank you RF1

That sound like the good choice.
Even that he could had changed it.

thanks, I have had this one but it works not for me anymore..
    for you it works?

  9. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 13:11:48 by Blackmadonna

@niki yes it does, just give it some time to load, and it will only start to show something shortly before the race.

I was wondering about an article on AS today. Journalists...i don't want to give them too much credit, but they said that for Fernando's soft tyres in Q3, they forgot to change the angle of the front wing fitting to the tyres, and that this made Fernando loose some tenths in his flying lap.
Actually i hope its true. It means Fer could still have been faster, maybe enough for starting from P5.

  10. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 13:12:37 by ThePowerOfOne

RF1PP, sorry for doubling it, but I wanted to know if possible which countries do the RF1 trucks pass through on their journey from Enstone to Istanbul. It's close to my home country, I just wanted to know if the go anywhere near it.

  18. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 13:33:52 by RF1 Paddock Pass

Hi The PowerOfOne, the trucks had a five day trek from Enstone to Istanbul. They drove all the way to Trieste in Italy to catch a ferry to Istanbul. It will be the reverse route on the way back with the trucks unlikely to arrive in Enstone until Friday next week. So a very short turn-around for Monaco.

  63. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 14:42:00 by Niki

I'm sorry for Fisi but it seems that it was his mistake and for Heikki too..

  64. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 14:42:07 by loco

    uf LH 1º Massa 2º
    Alonso 6º go Alonso!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but I just didn't like that move from Lewis! Massa did the right thing by moving away cause if he didn't, those 2 would've made contact with each other!

  72. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 14:50:53 by loco

Alonso a 38 second to LH

  73. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 14:51:20 by adam20692

hamilton had the inside line and was side by side if there had been an incident it probably would have been massa's fault to be quite honest i think he made a good move

  74. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 14:51:44 by loco

Lucky Nelson !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!go!!!!!!! Alonso go !!!!!!!!!!!!

  78. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 14:59:12 by adam20692

Just a question did piquet start on soft or hard tires

  79. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 14:59:47 by f1angel

I believe he started on the hard tyres! Great move by Nelson!

  98. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:34:16 by Blackmadonna

VERY WELL DONE Fernando for bringing this home!!! And we need Nelson to improve- they should help each other in the race!

  99. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:34:20 by amc

Good solid race by our boys. That's what we need, race in, race out to rack up the points and positions. A little regret that with the way Nelson drove today, you wonder how he would have been if he had qualified properly; but c'est la vie - maybe he drove the way he did today because of quali disappointment.

Heidfeld did really well, and I was quite impressed by Lewis actually - but Fernando did as much as he could with the car. Only disappointment he might feel is that with Heidfeld starting 9th he might have thought 5th place would have been realistic.

    Good stuff though...roll on Monaco!

  100. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:36:17 by bwells

Well done Renault!!! P6 for Fernando... we will improve!!

CONGRATULATION FERNANDO...you drove a solid race..at 1st stint, you were up there racing & having fun wth KIMI i guess...

More stuffs like this and you RENAULT surely establish as 4th POWER on the grid..

Nelson..for you, i think you need to learn more from Fernando while you have the chance..GOOD LUCK mate !!

  104. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:40:54 by f1angel

I don't think I've seen Felipe this happy in a while!

  105. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:41:30 by amc

well, it's a start, hah...being 4th best team when we were probably 6th or 7th a couple of races ago.

Of course, it always helps having a driver like Fernando at the wheel to confirm that.

  106. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:42:46 by hah

RENAULT clearly 4th POWER on the grid with FERNANDO driving R28...wait for SUPRISE at MONACO soon...

  107. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:43:04 by alonsogirl76

Great job Fernando and the team. Nelson did ok too. I am proud today.

  108. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 15:46:10 by hah

    amc..

Yeah, i'm very happy to see Fernando drove a solid race today...1st stint was very interesting to watch the sector time when he was behind KIMI...FERNANDO really pushing the car to its absolute limit..Great Drive

One question : What has happened today Nelsinho?

  113. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 16:03:35 by IceF1Mkd

Good job, it's clear that the Alonso/Renault combination is the 4th best force on track. We've consolidated. Now are appetites are raising...

@hah, since we're a little bit down on traction, you can't expect too much in Monaco.

Apart form that fact... concerning the rest of the factors, I think we'll be fine.

  114. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 16:03:38 by loco

Solid race for Alonso today. I guess we can safely say that we are now 4th behind the 3 front row teams. It was great start for FA from 7th to 5th. Kimi was just too quick , yet Alonso was able to secure the 6th place behind the 2 BMW drivers.

Nelson again had a very difficult race but it was nice to see him overtake Button. Obviously.he is still learning but I really wish he could end the race in the Top 10.

RF1, will there be new improvements in the car for the coming Monaco GP? It seems that we are heading in the right direction in terms of the car's performance compared to the first 3 races. Slowly but surely we are getting there.

Good Luck on the next races.

Don't expect too much of Monaco. Traction is important here, and more traction for the R28 might still mean less speed..otherwise, i would see a podium possible for Fer, he drove a fantastic race there last year.

    @IceF1Mkd...

We will see what will be at Monaco..

Maybe R28 lacking traction, i'm very sure the team will be working hard to prepare for this track...because this track should be one of possible track they are able to make a different...

Anyway..still without TC...we can expect more mistake from drivers...like LH, last year he was lucky getting away without broken car with his agressive drive thru curb & walls..

This year i believe only true driver will survive at Monaco and FERNANDO will be one of the driver possible for PODIUM..

Maybe i'm a little OPTIMISTIC but its because i belive FERNANDO have th skill to make a different with IMPROVED R28 and 110% backing effort by RENAULT TEAMS..

GO RENAULT & FERNANDO & NELSON

Nice one today. Nice race to see - ex. Nelsons passing manouvre - a good race for Fernando and good strategy. I'm looking forward to Monaco.
    Go Renault Go

Points, aye? Not bad. And Nelson made it to the finish. It looks like we're back to last year's situation: Ferrari / Macca / BMW / Renault.

And Massa didn't spin, nasty, nasty. At least Kova provided some entertainment.

Monaco - my favourite, thank God, finally. And if it rains - umm, yummy!

Sadly but I have to say that it is time to say goodbye to further development of R28 and focus on 2009 car. The sooner the better. Renault isn't in F1 to pick points but to fight for championship.

    @manchild

mate..it too early to say & even suggest that...i cant agree

RENAULT will be there to improve & fight with R28..

He-he, Manchild, Fern has a different opinion.

    http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php ...

"The three teams in front are way ahead of the rest, but let's hope the next step that we take can bring us closer to them."

Besides, the prize money are quite important (constructors' champ), I don't think we should throw in the towel.

I hear Honda are running a version of KERS on their cars, that sounds like a good idea for us. Dunno, maybe RF1 knows better?

  124. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 17:18:22 by ThePowerOfOne

To support manchild a bit, I am too a bit scared that Renault must not miss the starting point for develeping the 2009 car. It's LOTS of changes, you know. Simple evolution won't do the job this time. And that CFD center, it probably takes time to make it function properly and only then one can start benefitting from it. Not to mention perfecting all the procedures.
About KERS... yeap, I read 'bout Honda putting such a device to the test too, BOL. I doubt that everybody will be using such a system. Some because of its development cost, others will find it's just to small of an advantage to prove its worth. According to Briatore developing it will costa som extra 20 million (not sure of the currency, Euro I thin)
Hope I don't sound like an i-know-it-all punk, just thoughts, just thoughts...

    Or is KERS obligatory?

Improving R28 instead of working only on R29 is like watering dead tree instead of planting a new one. New package Alonso mentions is probably already finished. So, the engineers have done what they could for R28, let the team use what it has and let engineers work on 2009 car.

  128. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 23:27:20 by theBlueOrangeLion

We'll see, remember "pundits" were saying in Melbourne we're slower than STR, where are those pundits now?

  129. Sunday 11 May 2008 at 23:35:11 by amc

manchild; with all due respect I don't think its as simple as saying they have done all they could for the R28. Practically speaking that is never the case - anything can be developed, and even though it's bounded by lots of rules, the possibilities are endless.

Also, in any engineering establishment, you will find that teams are created to cater for engineering projects for both current enhancements and new development. That would mean they have allocated engineers for the 2009 spec, and separate engineers dedicating their work on the R28 - and it is a waste of resources if they allocate ALL their engineers into future development.

They can learn alot from developing the R28 further...as it is never an absolutely clean sheet for a new season's development.

The F1 world is not as easy as you can imagine...i hope you are able to see the big picture...as RF1 fan, honestly i feel insulted by your comment/suggestion
