The team completes its final day of work in Monza today with Fernando Alonso once again behind the wheel of the R28.
After two productive days already this week, the team will continue fine-tuning the R28 and dialling it into this challenging circuit. The weather today is beautiful, just as it has been all week, giving us ideal conditions for testing once again.
Yesterday was quite a productive day for the team. There was a heavy workload with lots to get through and plenty of new parts to be tried out. Some more new parts arrived at the circuit overnight and will be fitted to the car during the day as the team aim to learn more about what works best at Monza. Along with the usual set-up work, Fernando will continue with brake testing as well as some suspension work in the afternoon.
Speaking with Fernando yesterday, he seemed fairly satisfied with his day's work. The track had improved quite a lot in comparison with the first day and it remained consistent, which is what you want at a test. But he pointed out that it's not an easy place to set the car up for and Formula 1 drivers are never fond of cars with low downforce. While it makes the car very fast in a straightline, it makes for very low grip in the corners and so the main challenge is to dial out the understeer through the chicanes. A good lap time also requires a car that can ride the curbs so that those chicanes can be straightlined as much as possible.
I went for a wander around the circuit yesterday evening to really get a feel for this place. It's one of the longer tracks of the year at 5.7km and I had a very enjoyable walk. The track is pretty flat for most of its length, except for the long back straight on the approach to the Ascari chicane where you start to feel the gradient.
Check back at lunchtime for the morning's times and then again at the end of the day for a final round up.

The Ascari Chicane - an amazing place to watch an F1 car!

You won't get lost at Monza!

A rather plush grandstand at the end of the pit lane.

The car is rebuilt in preparation for today's running.

A look down the Monza pit lane

A birds eye view of the trucks.

The view from above the pits - where the paddock club guests will watch the race from - what a view!

A wheel gun - for the left rear.

I am jealous of you RF1, would really like to have a walk in Monza like you did.
Good Luck guys

Other new parts? Still aero package that ensure good straightline speed? Alonso's style is underover. But now it's understeer. Not a good news. Ok,let's solve the problem.

It will be exciting to se how mutch "disadvantage" the engine will give us. Compared to the Maclerens, Ferraris and maby the BMWs. If we can keep the "gab" as it has been fore some times now. Or it will be bigger.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 11:23:02 by teomolca
Well I guess it well depend on how our Monza special package works in comparison to the others monza packages.
But I think it wont change much with respect to Valencia, that was a low downforce track also.
Well one thing I do hope will change. LUCK!!! And stay away from Nakajima!!!

True.
But the lack of enginepower, will still effect the whole packet. Even if we have a better aroepack.
And Monza will probably be the track that will effect us the most.

i have a question, why are the tires labeled left and right surely there is no difference between the tire on the left or right hand side?
Friday 29 August 2008 at 12:12:28 by ZackGem

There is a big difference in "wear".
So I thin it is a good idea to be able to se the if a tyre is from right og left side.
If we talk about the raintyres, the pattern will also be the wrong way, if they ar mixed

hmmm i'm just worried about the team's engine development, good acceleration and top speed is really needed in monza, i think the team should focus also in engine power ,because you would really see the true potential of the car within it. (mclaren and ferrari has the best engine so far when it comes to top speed and acceleration), goodluck RF1! PLease say hi to Fernando! i'm from Philippines, his numbaer ONE fan!!!
Friday 29 August 2008 at 14:29:22 by quidam
You can't do anything for the engine power this year. Better work on the car for curbs and chicanes, the drivers must feel confortable otherwise they will slowdown.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 14:29:46 by Hak182
hmm the more i hear about this engine freezing issue the more it baffles me, alot of the last couple of races excluding Valencia, i keep seeing Alonso and sometimes even piquet in top 6 for top speed on a certain part of a track or alot of the times its average speed round apex X and X so kinda still baffles me, i think our top end speed maybe ok? just the delivery of it?
Friday 29 August 2008 at 14:34:18 by gbmb
The times so far don't mean always a lot , for many reasons (fuel load , the situation of the tyres, the changes at set-ups etc).
That really counts is what Alonso will tell us at the end of the day, about the overall feeling of the car.
As for the lack of HP is something that we know and must learn to live with until the end of the season.

I'm forgetting this season, we are where we are and things will not improve for this year. We're looking maybe 5th or 6th in the constructors title if we are lucky. What I am looking forward to is next year - a more level playing field.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 16:52:57 by newna
The trucks seem quite long in the pictures, how long are they, over 15 meters?
Friday 29 August 2008 at 16:59:04 by Tony
I know some of you will have a go at me for being negative. However as I say to many people telling the truth, saying No, or not agreeing is NOT being negative. Think about it. You are being very POSITIVE,
Next year the engine may well be the same. I do not think Renault are going to spend money on an engine that is obsolite. The rule changes next year however are all to play for, KERS, less aerodynamics, tyres and probabley a host of other changes that the FIA are still inventing. Me I am looking forward to 2009 and especially end of year beginning of next year testing.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 17:00:48 by Tony
As for the R28 engine. It is powerful and fast but the R28 chassis and aero package are not up to it. Remember since using Bridgestone tyres the Renault has been terrible. Hopefully the new chassis will cope better with slick tyres.

Yes it is fast an powerfull.
It is an F1 engine.. But is is not ad fast as the main rivals. And that is a problem.
That means that Renault has to build the rest som mutch better, to compensate. And for fare less money (smaller budget).. Is see that as a big problem..

And does they?
I have not seen Renault deny the lack of power.
Only seen that Flavio have explained how Renault did not work on the engiene side, as the other teames still do.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 20:07:13 by Tony
@31 Sorry newna I just cannot agree with you. Of course RenaultF1 know they have a power deficit and IT IS AN ISSUE. We are slower than our competitors. There in the US you have the same thing in Indy racing, teams at the top and others not, some faster than others. So lets not pretend all is okay because it ain't. We are losing out big time but as I say this year is over for us, so lets pick up what we can but next year will be something else. Hopefully Renault will leap back to the top and Ferrari, McLaren, BMW, Toyota do not improve as much. Fingers crossed eh !!

Friday 29 August 2008 at 21:39:27 by ThePowerOfOne
Talking about the engine, you have probably listened to the last podcast in which Pat Symonds said that the Toro Rossos had a bit of torque advantage when accelerating from corners.
So may be that's just it - we lack a bit of power in the lower RPM range and the peak power output isn't that low.
Journalists here in my country (it's not that I beleive them wholeheartedly) keep saying that the RS27 power delivery curve through the RPM range was precisely optimised for the characteristics of the Michelin tyres which is a bit of a problem with these Bridgestones. This could explain traction problems while accelerating out of a curve.
But it's true that Renault knows best - they just won't let sth prevent them completely from winning again. So it's either they are doing sth (remember that a while ago Alonso said that the engine is being worked on) or the situation isn't that bad as we might think.
RF1PP, please excuse our persistent discussion on these matters.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 21:42:01 by newna
Tony according to the Podcast the team reckons that we are loosing about 15 HP or about a 2% handicap. I'm not sure that is significant enough to be a problem. I guess it would depend on the HP and Torque curves, that would give greater insight into the handicap it is causing.
However the team has allot more information on this issue than we do. If the FIA is acting unfairlly than they will loose fans and revenue.
To be honest I don't follow Indy cars or NASCAR, because the cars are identical, It would be like watching a horse race with all the horses being clones. Gee who will win.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 21:43:35 by dray
Ignore the engine hype folks.
Sure, there is something to it, but most of it is the creation of the Red Bull team desperately trying to justify why they are getting their arses kicked by their 'B team' lately.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 21:46:02 by Rulietta
We all know what's going to be his decision for next year... What I don't appreciate is Di Montezemolo's condescending behavior. Anyways...
About the testings, the performance is maintained, but did Fer spill his guts or was it just to set up the car? Is is about making times? I don't wanna judge until I know. If it's about making times, then this is a constant since the beginning of this season, 5th to 8th. No improvement made then? I won't say I'm not disappointed, but now we got used to strategy making up for a lack of performance, to spectacular surprises or to bitter disillusion. I can't deny this season is emotionally intense lol
But, big but (if I daresay)... Would we prefer a crushing domination which could tend to become slightly boring, or do we like our dose of surprises? Surprises which, as we know, weights heavily on the team's spirit? That's an interesting question. But we all know the answer is made of a single word: RESULTS.
So we're with you guys. Dedication is the best medication, if I can risk the easy assonance.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 23:02:33 by adam20692
i have to say im quite supprized that renault havent tried those anvil/dumbo wings out considerng BMW and mclaren both use them and Honda clearly got a preformance boost from it.
Friday 29 August 2008 at 23:03:34 by adam20692
ups ment to add a question to that for RF1, so how come we havent tried them out is there a specific reason like it wont work with our front wing or something else?
Friday 29 August 2008 at 23:41:11 by NandoFan
@Diki: Thats no news if you ask me. They both are contracted for another year for Kimi and 2 years for Massa. So untill now they will be racing next year, but doesn't guarantee anything yet.
@Dray: Smell the coffee
) Last race where engine performance was key proved that the 5 fastest cars contain Ferrari engines. Not to mention other teams that got ahead of us. And yes, you can ignore it but that won't help us any further.
Saturday 30 August 2008 at 00:32:30 by gbmb
@POWEROFONE. The way of delivering the power an F1 engine (torque curve) can change easily , is a matter of electronics , (engine mapping) even the driver can change the mapping during a single lap.
Renault's Horse Power deficit , even just 15 Horses , is extremely important. At the straight line if the R28 needs high speed so the choice is less downforce ( less wing ) , but on the corners the less downforce makes the R28 a little slower (no good grip).
Ferrari has more HP so can have high speed with more downforce compare to us, so can be also faster at the curves because of the most wing ( better grip ).
Soon or later RF1 will overcome the HP deficit , but not in one day , it will take time. Let's be patient , and have low expectations for this season. I don't feel that this way of thinking is pathetic , i say is realistic.
Saturday 30 August 2008 at 00:41:06 by NandoFan
By the way, thanks for the pics rf1pp. It amazes me how basic and a bit old fashion the wheelgun looks. You say it's for the left rear. Is that so because it just happens to be there or can it only be used for the left rear ?? I would be amazed again because a wheelnut should be the same for all 4 wheels.
Saturday 30 August 2008 at 00:51:42 by ThePowerOfOne
@gbmb, 46. True. That is the most common beleif, even Fernando supports it, it's probably true, partially.
But there is this one thing that you can't program an engine beyond it's structural abilities.
And for the wing to really work you actually need air moving fast and that isn't the case in really slow corners. Mechanical grip is key there.
Saturday 30 August 2008 at 03:17:28 by alonsonum1
i have just been lookin at smoe old pictures of fernando.. i wish so much that renault could give him a winnin car again... i miss his smile, his victory dance. Alonso is not happy at the moment and its heart breakin to see he is the driver on that grid that deserves a decent car more than anybody.. i admire him more than words can describe and i wish him al the best for his future racing.. i just hope one day i get to see that cheeky smile on the podium again.. i feel all emotional i reali miss it

in the new look website, any chance of a special place where technical discussions (engines etc)can take place? Where maybe a mechanic could occasionally drop by too, to clarify things
Saturday 30 August 2008 at 10:21:20 by Tony
@46 Very well put. You explained it very well, and a realist is a realist, good for you.
Saturday 30 August 2008 at 10:29:29 by gbmb
@POWERTONE. I agree that the only key for grip isn't the wing. Depends on the kind of curves. On the slow corners suspension is the major factor of grip , on the fast corners is the aeropackage.

Note: I can't believe I'm not in Paris when Sebastien Bourdais is -at this very moment- driving through the Champs Elysées right up to the Place de la Concorde with his F1 car. Argh...
RF1, nothing of that style planned for Renault? I mean, I happen -like some fetish maniac- to go to the Renault shop on the Champs Elysées to see the F1 car exposed there, although it's the old model without the aerodynamic shark thingy. But Gosh, how I wish I could see some weird urban action with one of these cars -and their drivers obviously. Hi guys, sorry for being absent from the blog for the last few days. The final day in Monza was pretty manic and this is the first chance I’ve had to get online and update you on the test. All in all, it was quite a productive week, although it’s fair to say that it was also a challenging one. The thing is that Monza is such a difficult place to get the car working because it’s a unique track that requires a very specific car. By the end of the final day things looked quite promising and Fernando was getting happier with the set-up, which means we should be able to head there with an idea of what we need from the car.
In the meantime, the team’s attention is moving to Belgium and this weekend's race. You can read the drivers’ preview interviews on the team site right now.
As for your question about the wheel gun, nandofan, I said it was a left rear because it just happened to be the one that I snapped. However, if it was a front wheel gun it would have looked quite different because it would have had the protective shield on it.

Will the drivers start with fress engines at spa?
Or will they use the same as in the last race?
I know Fernando can use a new engine. But it could make sense to use the one from the last race, who did not do many laps. And in that way put a new in for the race at Monza.
Monday 1 September 2008 at 21:43:40 by NandoFan
Thanks rf1pp. I forgot about the front wheel shields.
Welcome to the rollercoaster of Spa, which is always special since I live there ;o) but this year especially because of driving without TC.
Therefore it will be extra tricky for teams that will compromise some downforce for extra speed.
Fernando has't won yet at Spa if I'm not mistaken, something he probably deserves more than anyone.
Lets hope for a good weekend!

@72
Good luck with your exams, don't daydream about hot bearded drivers too much (well not until the exam has finished anyway!!)

Are you girls talking about Heidfeld ??? bearded driver ?????

@76
WHAT POSITIVE ENERGY
i dont believe in stupid things like 'being optimistic brings luck'
i am an alonso fan and a RF1 fan but i like to write what i BELIEVE,
i wont write
'ye, im happy, we're fast, oh how great it is in 11 place we're improving a lot yes im happy, go go go '
no im not that kind of style
i just prefer us (rf1) to make a competitive car for next season, and stop developing r28, cuz its really bad
about engines, i dont think fia did a mistake, renault did, we managed to cut off the engine workers to save money, its not like that!
why mclaren and ferrari and bmw and all other teams have more persons who still develop the engines?
we can develop it with permission of fia, i dunno why we dont do it
anyway, we have the driver : alonso, if something has be made it must be spa, go for the podium and NOT be satistied with finishing 8th-7th,
we were champions in 05-06
and now we're happy for being just in points? i think im not so pessimistic, our guys are,
they can do more and they know it, it just needs a bit power, we're defending in all races, we dont do overtakes, this is not racing in my point of view
our racing remembers me schumi-barichello-ferrari at 2003, strategy wins

@84
I think you are just being realistic.
We got a fairly lucky 4th place in the first race of the season and if i remember rightly Fernando said something along the lines of that although Renault would be improving so would the other teams so nothing much would alter. and between 6th and 8th place, a bit higher if others mess up is exactly were we are.
So as much as I want to see Renault up in the bigger points and fernando on the podium, I wouldn't stake money on it happening.
Saying that, I'll still be glued to the TV over the weekend, cheering them on and willing it to happen though!

@72 Fernando looked good. Hope this weekend will be much better for the team!
Good LUck!

@aryton. we cannot just develop the engine we have to ask the fia if we can change a part due to it being unreliable or dangerous and then they have to get approval not only from the fia but the other teams can complain aswell and due to all the huff and puff about engines at the moment it will probably be even harder to get these improvements approved. Also dont just take examples of posistions from the last race which was obviously a one of, in the last two races excluding valencia renault had scored more points than any other team bar mclaren. So all i have to say is stop complaining all the time cause its getting old i cant understand complaining about this race but you never ever say anything positive. Not once have i heard you say well done renault even when we qualied 2nd in barcelona so change the story once in a while please!
Wednesday 3 September 2008 at 20:13:51 by adam20692
upps i ment to say i can understand complaining about this race (meaning velencia) lol
Wednesday 3 September 2008 at 21:19:24 by MO1023
@84 your moaning is getting old. I don't understand how you think your being realistic at all? Sorry but the simple truth is we are not fighting for podiums and victories we are fighting for 4th place in constructors.. the sooner you see that the better. All of us want Renault to be at the top and renault are working as hard as possible to make that happen.. but that doesn't happen overnight so what's wrong with being happy that renault have scored important points to help them secure 4th place and if we get a podium or a win great.

@adam-I agree with you completely...

i have a question why did michellin actualy leave formula 1 cause ive never actualy found out why
Wednesday 3 September 2008 at 23:54:00 by ThePowerOfOne
@ adam20692. They didn't want to. The FIA decided that a single tyre supplier should be appointed and that this supplier should be Bridgestone.

Hello everybody!!! Guys!adam20692 is not trying to dissapoint us, he just right that there is the problem and as true Reanult fan he is concerned about that, what about Renault improvements, so they are fantastic! seriuosly we beat anyone in mechanics and aerodinimics, we even overcame that tires problem, and if we would get additional 20 hp right now, we would beat Ferrari even loosing other 10 hp, I am sure about that, anyway I want to say thatnk you for everyone in Renault for there job. What about last race, so that just failure which we need to forget, if Fernando and Nelsinyo wuold not make those mistakes we would be in Q3, look Nelson had 9th best fast lap, so at least he could be 9th during qualification. Alonso needed to to complete the race in his first lap becouse of reckless Nakajima act. In SPA I am sure we will be better.
Now to the RF1 Paddock Pass please post some article about what is Renault planning to do with the engine, which willl be the reaction on that situation?? At least is Renault recognises there mistakes and in 2012 are they will be trying to present the best engine (when freeze up will be over) I mean we want to be sure that Renault is not going to make the same mistake twice in future. Thank You!!! So far I am positive that we will get 4th position. Also is there any info on internet about the all teams engines powers, so to compare, what do you guys think do we loose in the power to Toyota??
Thursday 4 September 2008 at 09:54:44 by croatianboy
Pat Symonds said that they will have a new front wing for i think monza.I dont see anything new only front bridge like on toyota and mclaren. Is there anything new accept that???
Thursday 4 September 2008 at 13:30:31 by adam20692
